Amerika, das ist jemand anders: Lyrik aus den USA beim poesiefestival berlin

Das poesiefestival berlin widmet sich am 4.7.2009 der Poesie verschiedener
US-amerikanischen Bevölkerungsgruppen.



In den USA brodelt es. Die Finanzkrise hat das Land erschüttert, mit der
Wahl von Obama zum ersten schwarzen Präsidenten schlägt die Politik einen
neuen Ton an. Die verschiedenen Bevölkerungsgruppen der USA drängen immer
weiter ins Blickfeld. Selbstbewusst besinnen sie sich auf ihre eigenen
kulturellen Wurzeln, eine Entwicklung, die sich besonders auch in der
Poesie abzeichnet. Den 4.7.2009, der Nationalfeiertag der Vereinigten
Staaten, hat das poesiefestival berlin zum Independence-Day der Dichtkunst
erklärt und stellt die wichtigsten Vertreter der Dichtung des weißen,
schwarzen, asiatischen, hispanischen und indigenen Amerikas vor. Mit dabei
sind u. a. die Pulitzer-Preisträgerin Rita Dove, der Spoken Word-Poet Saul
Williams und Rosmarie Waldrop, eine deutsche Immigrantin.



Rosmarie Waldrop emigrierte in den fünfziger Jahren von Deutschland in die
USA. In ihrem Werk verknüpft sie ihr Leben mit einem Indianerstamm auf
Rhode Island. Ebenso wie die Traditionen des Narragansetts-Stammes
verändert sich ihre kulturelle Identität langsam. Einen umgekehrten Weg
ging Christian Hawkey: Er pendelt zwischen Berlin und New York.

Die USA sind ein kultureller Flickenteppich, der nur auf den ersten Blick
eine Einheit ist. Unterschiedliche Bevölkerungsgruppen entwickelten ihre
eigenen künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen, beeinflussten sich gegenseitig,
ohne jedoch ihre Eigenständigkeit zu verlieren. Die preisgekrönten Lyriker
Sherwin Bitsui, Rita Dove, Claudia Keelan und John Yau zeichnen in "A
Poetic Landscape" ihre jeweils eigene poetische Landkarte der USA, aus dem
Blickwinkel der verschiedenen Ethnien.

Mit performativer Wucht und beschwörender Stimme lehnt sich der Musiker,
Spoken Word-Poet und Schauspieler Saul Williams gegen gesellschaftliche
Missstände auf. Mit "Not in My Name" komponierte er die Hymne des
Widerstandes gegen den Irakkrieg, in seinen Performances verbreitet er
eine kompromisslose politische Botschaft. Ebenso wie Edwin Torres setzt er
dabei nicht nur die Sprache ein: "My goal has never truly been to become
an amazing poet, rather I have worked at becoming more expressive,
thoughtful, and harmoniously balanced, and courageous enough to live my
life as a poem."


Das poesiefestival berlin wird gefördert durch den Hauptstadtkulturfonds
und findet statt in Kooperation mit der Akademie der Künste.

America, that's someone else: poetry from the USA at the poesiefestival
berlin



On 4 July 2009, the poesiefestival berlin will be devoted to the poetry of
various population groups in the USA.




Things are bubbling in the USA: the financial crisis has shaken the nation
to its foundations and politics has taken on a whole new tone with the
election of Obama as the first Afro-American president. The various
population groups in the USA are pushing more and more for visibility and
recalling their cultural roots with increasing self-confidence, a trend
which can be seen especially clearly in poetry. The poesiefestival berlin
has declared the Fourth of July 2009, the national holiday of the United
States, as the Independence Day of the art of poetry and will be
presenting some of the most important representatives of the poetry of
white, Afro-American, Asian, Hispanic and indigenous America. They include
Pulitzer Prize winner Rita Dove, Spoken Word poet Saul Williams and
Rosmarie Waldrop, an immmigrant from Germany.



Rosmarie Waldrop emigrated to the USA from Germany in the 1950s. In her
work, she connects her life with an Indian tribe in Rhode Island. Like the
traditions of the Narragansett tribe, her cultural identity is changing
slowly. Christian Hawkey took the opposite route: he commutes between
Berlin and New York.

The USA is a cultural patchwork carpet that only appears at first glance
to be unified. Different population groups have developed their own forms
of artistic expression and have influenced each other without, however,
losing their distinctness. In "A Poetic Landscape", prizewinning poets
Sherwin Bitsui, Rita Dove, Claudia Keelan and John Yau will each be
drawing their own poetic map of the USA from the perspective of the
various ethnic groups.

With performative power and bewitching voice, musician, spoken word poet
and actor Saul Williams attacks social ills. His song "Not in My Name"
became the anthem of resistance to the Iraq war, and in his performances
he spreads an uncompromising political message. Like Edwin Torres, he does
not use only language to do this: "My goal has never truly been to become
an amazing poet, rather I have worked at becoming more expressive,
thoughtful, and harmoniously balanced, and courageous enough to live my
life as a poem."

The poesiefestival berlin gratefully acknowledges the financial assistance
of the Hauptstadtkulturfonds and takes place in cooperation with the
Academy of the Arts.
